Editor's Review of Bernstein's Soups

by Rhonda Spivak, February 10, 2016

I've had occasion this winter to sample a lot of Bernstein's delicious soups (all vegetarian) and I thought I'd give readers a list of my favourites in case you have not tried them all.

1. Curried Lentil Pea and Bean - This was my absolute favourite - the curry flavour is right on and I highly recommend it, and I am not usually a curry lover. For those who don't like curry, try the Lentil soup, which has carrots in it and is also very flavourful.

2. Carrot and Butter Bean Soup - This is a great soup. I haven't tried "Butterbeans" before and really like the taste

3. Butternut Squash - This is another one of my favourites - if you are a squash lover you'll really like this soup. Everyone in my family has given this one a thumbs up.

4. Beet and Cabbage Borscht (vegetarian) - This one is also very tasty. I am generally a borscht lover.

5. Vegetable and Barley - When my parents were part owners of the "famed" International Inn, the soup of the day was always Bean and Barley. We used to joke that it wasn't really the soup of the "day "but rather the soup of "the decade". Somehow eating Bernstein's vegetable and barley soup brought back childhood memories for me of eating the International Inn's Bean and Barley soup. This Bernstein's soup has a bit of spice to it which I liked, and a great texture and consistency.

6. Bernstein's Tomato Soup - This one is also good, but it has a bit of a kick to it. If you are trying to stay away from anything spicy, then the others are better choices.

If you like, you can order ahead and Bernstein's will make them up for you.
