Dear Community Members,
On the heels of the hateful violent acts in Quebec, I am reminded of our responsibility as citizens and as Jews to remain vigilant to protect our inclusive values that we hold so dear. It is at times like these that one is reminded of the quote from Martin Niemöller:
"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out - Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me."
Such elegant and meaningful thoughts and sentiments have never been more relevant they are today. At a time when it would be so easy to become divisive and isolationist, as a community we have shown that strength comes from speaking up with compassion and an unwavering intolerance for discrimination and violence.
When we speak in unison against hatred, we are never alone.
