Young women’s empowerment initiative reaps success in local community

by Shai Josopov & Sigal Kleynerman, May 17 2017

On Thursday, May 11th, the second ‘Empowered by CFHU’ event took place in Winnipeg, following the success of the first event, which took place in February. 22 young Jewish women, from different professional backgrounds,
gathered together to discuss the importance of self-care for women in today’s world.

The event began with a sushi workshop led by local Chef Sergei Didenko. Later, the women welcomed Jillian McIntosh, a psychotherapist who works to provide psychoeducation that promotes autonomy, resilience, creativity
and compassion within women. McIntosh gave an insightful and empowering seminar, discussing the practice of self-care for women, debunking myths, and focusing on the different challenges that women face.

A number of Hebrew University alumni were amongst the women who attended the event. One of them was Meira Gisser, a young lawyer working at Deeley Fabbri Sellen Law Corporation. “I very much enjoyed the sushi and self-care
event”, said Meira, “The atmosphere was welcoming and the seminar Jillian facilitated was very interesting and gave us all a lot to think about and discuss after”. When asked about how she sees the program's impact on the community, Meira replied “This initiative
provides a new way for young Jewish women in the community to interact and discuss ideas and experiences. ‘Empowered by CFHU' events are innovative and fun. I have enjoyed the educational component of the events and have made many new connections as well."
Later, Meira spoke about meeting with the other Hebrew U alumni at the event. “It was so nice to catch up with other alumni. It was a great networking opportunity as well as a fun night and I look forward to the next one!"

The project, sponsored by ‘The Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University’, was initiated by Sigal Kleynerman, CFHU's Hebrew University Community Ambassador to Winnipeg, and local Jewish young professional Alexa Solomon,
marketing and community coordinator for 'FarmLink Marketing Solutions' and 'Farm At Hand' in Winnipeg. The idea behind the program is to encourage young Jewish women from diverse professional backgrounds, to meet, network and acquire a substantial skill-set
for personal and professional development, while allowing them to learn new, valuable information, as well as open up and speak freely about their professional and personal needs.
