I have had occasion recently to taste some take out kosher food prepared by Gwen Secter Creative Living Centre, which would be great to order for Rosh Hashana (Jump down to see the full menu and prices) .
Let's begin with the carrot cake, which was my favourite of the items I have sampled (The sweet and sour meatballs that I'll tell you about in a moment were a very close runner up). The carrot cake was delicious-moist and sweet (but not too sweet), with raisens, and a great texture. The problem is that I ate too much of it-way too much of it. It can always be served as a side to a meal, and would be ideal to order for Rosh Hashana (or anytime throughout the year.)
I also recommend the tasty and flavourful sweet and sour meatballs , ( the carrot cake goes very well with them) which are also ideal for Rosh Hashana. You get 12 good sized meatballs for $12 dollars, which is very reasonably priced. Another option that I tried is the chicken breast , which comes individually wrapped (You can also order dark meat if you prefer). The chicken is also very good and of course is a staple Rosh Hashana item.
The verenkes were particularly good--so good, that I barely got to try them as members of my family gobbled them up. I blinked and they were gone! Needless to say they'd make a great side dish for Rosh Hashana.
I also tried two soups-the mouth watering chicken matzo ball soup is a classic, and you can't go wrong with it. The vegetable soup had a nice texture and flavour. Another popular soup is the pea soup, which I would like to try in the future.
All of the prices of the items I sampled were reasonable, especially given that this is kosher food.
I should emphasize that all of the items I sampled (any many more) are available year round on Gwen Secter's take out menu, so don't hesitate to try any of them out before Rosh Hashana arrives!
