Our Canada – Celebrating, Exploring, Questioning A show of new works by WAVE Artists at the New Iceland Heritage Museum

Sept 14, 2017

How do you imagine “Our Canada”?  That is the question that artists of the WAVE Interlake Artists’ Studio Tour have been asking themselves this year.  You can find their creative responses at the New Iceland Heritage Museum during their Our Canada show of new works, September 15th through December 30th.  Celebrate Canada’s 150 by viewing these stunning works in paper, clay, gemstones, oil, watercolour, photography, pottery, iron and more.

The diversity of the artists, mediums and perspectives, like the WAVE Tour itself, offers an incredible range of expressions of Our Canada.  Some of the works explore the long-established ideas and images of Canada as a composition; be it a quilt, mosaic, or railroad.  Other works respond with the powerful experiences of Canadian nature and landscapes.  Still others consider the history and future of Canadian peoples as this country constantly evolves and changes.  What will you think of Our Canada when you see them all?

The Our Canada show also includes more than 15 special events hosted by the artists, in keeping with the WAVE Artists’ commitment to sharing their creative processes and spaces.  Demonstrations, workshops, activities and artists’ talks take place through the exhibit’s run.  Learn more about the pieces and how to express your own creativity in new ways by taking in as many of these free events as you can!  Find a complete listing of special events for the Our Canada show atwww.watchthewave.ca and www.nihm.ca

The New Iceland Heritage Museum’s special exhibition space has been expanded to include the Lady of the Lake Theatre so that work in the Our Canada show can, like our country, stretch out to encompass the whole of the NIHM exhibition spaces. The New Icelandic Heritage Museum is pleased to host the Our Canada Show, as their mission includes highlighting the stories of the first settlements of the Icelandic forefathers. Designed to be a truly ethnic museum, the NIHM fosters the heritage and the culture of the Icelandic community in Manitoba. As suchthe Museum anticipates that the Our Canada show will attract a larger and more diverse audience while educating visitors about a very unique chapter in Canada’s history. A partnership of art and history wrapped in a special show that considers what it means to be part of Our Canada.

Get up close and personal with artists of the WAVE; see Our Canada through uniquely creative eyes; in a uniquely Manitoba setting.

Open public reception:  Friday, September 15, 7-9pm, New Iceland Heritage Museum, 94 1st Avenue, Gimli, MB.  Open to the Public.  Show runs to December 30th
