Dr. Chatterley and MaryAnn Kanee

Major Gift by Kanee Family to CISA's Endowment Fund

By Rhonda Spivak

It was in June 2010 that Dr. Catherine Chatterley established the Canadian Institute for the Study of Antisemitism (CISA) and shortly thereafter gave the CEO of The Jewish Foundation of Manitoba a personal cheque for $1,000 to establish an endowment fund for the Institute.

Seven years later, CISA’s endowment fund has received a very special and substantial gift of $250,000 from MaryAnn Kanee in memory of her husband Stephen and his family.

Marsha Cowan, CEO of the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, said "the Foundation was very pleased to introduce Mrs. Kanee to Dr. Chatterley and CISA and give the Kanee family an opportunity to support a cause in perpetuity they deem of greatest importance."

CISA’s Chairman, Sandy Shindleman, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Institute, “We are very grateful to Mrs. Kanee for her support of CISA’s important work, including our new journal, Antisemitism Studies.

“Funding scholarship and education on the specific problem of antisemitism is a necessity,” Dr. Chatterley wrote to the Winnipeg Jewish Review, “as it is not represented or addressed adequately in the larger culture or in academic circles, including those dedicated to studying many other forms of bigotry and prejudice. Mrs. Kanee has done a wonderful thing and we thank her on behalf of our students, readers, supporters, and colleagues.”

Endowment funds provide organizations with annual income to support their projects and programming, offering ongoing stability and longevity. Donors can designate their own funds to support a specific charity’s endowment fund at the Jewish Foundation, and thereby support its good work in perpetuity.
