When David Borzykowski (’01), Gray Academy of Jewish Education’s Director of Marketing and Communications, first started in his position, one of his goals was to produce a magazine. The magazine would inform alumni and community members of the great things happening at Gray Academy as well as tell the stories of our graduates.

“As an alum of the school,” says David, “I’ve often wondered where some of my former classmates are.”

With the help of a grant from the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, this dream is becoming a reality. This Rosh Hashannah, Gray Academy is launching the inaugural magazine, Legacies. The first edition features stories about a reunion of the Talmud Torah class of ’51; Sarah Jacobsohn, Grade 12 student and captain of the Canadian junior national ultimate team; Emily Kalo (’18), the 12^th best public speaker in the world; and more.

Lori Binder (’91), Head of School and CEO, explains why this was an important goal for the school. “This magazine gives us the opportunity to share the amazing happenings at Gray Academy in a robust way and will bring us closer to our alumni and the greater community,” says Lori. “We are grateful to the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba for the grant that has allowed us to bring the magazine to life.”

As a special connection to Gray’s alum, Ben Waldman (’14) was brought on to write some of the content. Waldman recently graduated from the Ryerson University School of Journalism and currently writes for the Winnipeg Free Press. 

“It meant a lot to give back to Gray,” says Ben. “I was honoured to write for a place that's meant so much to me for so long." 

Gray Academy plans on producing the magazine twice a year and is always looking for interesting stories to feature.
