Federation’s 'Immediate Needs Goal' for its Emergency Covid 19 Community Relief Fund is $750,000

by Rhonda Spivak, June 28, 2020

The Winnipeg Jewish Review has obtained a copy of a document sent out by the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg that indicates that the “immediate needs goal” of the Covid 19 Community Relief Fund is $750,000. The breakdown of this amount is as follows: Social Services-$417,000, Religious & Cultural Services-$185,000, Youth Services-$148,000. The document indicates which Jewish organizations need financial assistance, and was distributed to top donors of the Federation. The Winnipeg Jewish Review has decided not to publish the organizations that need financial assistance in order to maintain their privacy.

The Winnipeg Jewish Review spoke to Joel Lazer, President of the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg who stated that the need for $750,000 is for the end of August 2020, as more money will likely be required after that point.  Lazer also confirmed that the need for $750,000 may be in addition to the $400,000 that the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba will be distributing to community charitable organizations. The Jewish Federation and the Jewish Foundation are working closely together on the grant requests they are receiving to make sure the needs of the community are met. Lazer is optimistic that donors will step up to the plate and support the Federation’s emergency Covid 19 Community Relief Fund, since donors now understand just how important this fund is in order to keep our Jewish institutions afloat and maintain a strong community, able to cope with the coronavirus pandemic.
