News release

February 7, 2022 – Winnipeg, Manitoba – Office of the Hon. Jim Carr, P.C., M.P.

Today, the Honourable Jim Carr, P.C., M.P. (Winnipeg South Centre) tabled Bill C-235, Building a Green Prairie Economy Act.

Written in the spirit of collaboration, the private member’s bill offers the opportunity for all levels of government, First Nations and Métis governing bodies, and private sector employers and employees to unite for a common cause. The bill requires the federal government to develop a framework for local cooperation and engagement in the implementation of federal programs across multiple sectors to build a green economy in the Prairie provinces.

The framework must include measures that promote economic sustainability and growth and employment in the Prairie provinces by

•             Advancing innovative solutions for public transportation in small cities and communities.

•             Fostering job creation and retraining in the energy sector to build a zero-emissions green economy.

•             Prioritizing green infrastructure projects such as tree planting, solar energy, and new sources of energy, including nuclear.

•             Integrating clean energy into the agriculture, forestry, transportation, manufacturing, and tourism sectors.

•             Establishing programs and projects that stimulate a green economy.

•             Preparing infrastructure projects that mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

The bill can be viewed at https://www.parl.ca/DocumentViewer/en/44-1/bill/C-235/first-reading

Quote

“Among the many lessons and reflections about battling COVID-19 is that Canadians want their governments at all levels to work together towards a common goal. This bill captures that sentiment and mandates the federal government to build a framework that includes provincial and municipal governments, First Nations and Metis governing bodies, the private sector and their employees, and leaders in civil society to work together building a green economy on the Prairies.”

The Honourable Jim Carr, P.C., M.P. (Winnipeg South Centre)
