[Editor's note: Below is the statement of the WJT on Israel and Jewish communities]
Over the past week, our board and staff have been following the news with heavy hearts. The horrific attacks by the terrorist organization Hamas, that began on Saturday October 7, have left Jewish communities scared, grieving, and heartbroken.
Winnipeg Jewish Theatre unequivocally stands with Israel and Jewish communities around the world. We believe in emphasizing our shared humanity and we oppose violence against all innocent civilians.
WJT will continue our advocacy against the alarming rise in antisemitism in Canada, encouraging our colleagues in the arts to stand with the Jewish community.
WJT is determined to create spaces for Jewish artists nationwide to grieve and emerge from this ongoing tragedy together.
Through centuries of persecution, oppression, and trauma, Jewish people found solace and healing through humour and the arts. In these trying and terrifying times, we welcome our community to come together at WJT and find unity, inspiration, and comfort through the powerful medium of theatre.
With heavy hearts, we pray for safety and peace for all.
