Chris Melnick: Mourning a beautiful soul: Vivian Silver

Nov 15, 2023

During a visit to Israel several years ago, I had the good fortune to meet Vivian Silver.  She openly welcomed me and introduced me to members of a women’s peace group in Jerusalem.  The next day she took me into Gaza to meet with like-minded Gazan women.  The women warmly greeted each other and more than welcomed me.  One of the Gazan women told me with hope and pride that she was planning to run in the next election on a Peace Platform.  It was an extraordinary day and a glimpse of what could be.

Much has rightfully been said about Vivian’s wonderful work with the Palestinian people.  Not as well-known is her work with the Bedouin people, helping them acquire education for their children and I believe access to healthcare as well.  Her kindness and generosity knowing no bounds.

During one of her visits to Winnipeg, I happened to be speaking at the Arab-Jewish Dialogue.  She came with me, setting up a table to sell hand-made jewelry to raise funds for her peace efforts.  I am happy to tell you that many pieces were purchased that night.

For me, one of Vivian’s most enduring features, besides her great energy, was her open, honest and authentic smile, which I will always remember.

In honour of Vivian’s life well-lived, even in these dark days, I am re-dedicating myself to doing what I can to make this world a better place for all peace-loving people.

– Chris Melnick
