Gail Asper and Ayelet Razin Bet Or

GAIL ASPER'S LETTER TO THE WINNIPEG FREE PRESS RE: JEN ZORATTI THAT THE WINNIPEG FREE PRESS DID NOT PUBLISH

by Gail Asper, published here on Feb 27, 2024

RE:     Jen Zoratti’s Article:  The battlefield between feminism and rapes of war

I was extremely disappointed by Jen Zoratti's article discussing the Hear our Voices event at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, which shone a clear light on the horrific, premeditated and systematic gender based atrocities perpetrated by Hamas terrorists against Israeli women and girls on Oct 7.

This issue has not been in the headlines or condemned by the world and has in fact been denied and disbelieved by some, (or as the speaker said-#Me Too unless you're a Jew).

Zoratti actually believes it was inappropriate to relay the facts about the gut churning cruelty and misogyny and the presentation was exploiting victims to justify Israel's actions in Gaza.  At no time did the discussion ever imply this and this is a terrible insult to the credentials and motives of Ayelet Razin Bet Or who, as an independent citizen and lifelong feminist, is working to raise awareness about this issue.

The plight of Gazans including women and children is tragic and is why Israel has been called before the International Court of Justice. This story dominates the headlines while the plight of Israeli women has not.

All that Ayelet Razin Bet Or was doing was to speak out on behalf of Israeli victims whose voices have been silenced and suffering denied or worse - deemed deserved.

Zoratti has completely missed the point of the evening and has fallen into the trap of saying that the suffering of Gazans justifies silencing the voices of Israeli women. My take-away message from the article is Jewish women should not talk about what happened.

It is a terrible shame we can't rely on journalists like Jen Zoratti to speak about it or support the conversation without resorting to "what aboutism".
