Playing Together, Winning Together at the Simkin Centre Olympics!

Aug 14,2024

The Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre and Misericordia Place joined forces for the inaugural Interfacility Olympics, a lively event that brought together residents, staff, and families in a celebration of community. Held at the Simkin Centre over two days, on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, and Thursday, August 8, 2024, the Olympics were filled with great enthusiasm, friendly competition and amazing camaraderie. Check out CTV Winnipeg’s coverage: https://winnipeg.ctvnews.ca/video/c2974594-interfacility-olympics-in-winnipeg.

Opening Ceremonies
The games commenced with an inspiring Opening Ceremony on August 6th, led by Rabbi Matthew Leibl. The event was officially launched by torchbearer, Simkin Centre resident Ken Galanchuk. Ken, a former top midget hockey player in Winnipeg and one of the province’s best basketball players, carried the torch with pride. His illustrious career, which includes playing on the Canadian Olympic Team and serving as the director of the Winnipeg Jets hockey club, made him a fitting choice to ignite the Olympic spirit.

Games and Activities
Participants engaged in a variety of games that showcased their skills and brought out their competitive spirit in going for the gold:

Balloon Net Volleyball | Axe Throwing | Shuffleboard
Bean Bag Toss | Bowling | Olympic Trivia

The atmosphere was electric, with staff, residents, and families from both facilities cheering on their teams, creating an environment of support and joy.

Closing Ceremonies
The Olympics concluded on August 8th with the Closing Ceremonies, led by Steven Hyman. The winners were announced, and medals were presented. The Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre took home the Gold, with a total score of 575, narrowly edging out Misericordia Place, which earned Silver and a score of 562. Mazel Tov and Congratulations!

This event was a testament to the strength, unity, and joyous spirit of our community. It also created lasting memories for everyone involved.
